Macabre Meanderings 2

The bellydance and burlesque communities are sadly not always able to join together in peace or performances but modern bellydance troupe OhMaya have always been great allies and friends of the ladies of the BQB. We have been working together for the last couple of years, always leaving a spot for solo or troupe performances in each others shows. Some of our members have even collaborated on show production. Miss Heather Sara saved my behind in the later part of my pregnancy and the first months with the baby by picking up the slack and helping produce shows for the troupe.

As much as we love working with the bellydance community it's not always easy. I can only speak from my point of view and I've only bellydanced at burlesque shows a few times so maybe it's not easy for them either. We usually feel a little out of place at bellydance productions. The performers always welcome us with open arms but the audience never seems to know what to do with us. The burlesque audience in St. John's has slowly been educated about what we do and how to respond to a good shimmy. When someone isn't expecting it or has never even seen burlesque before the response can be a bit cold. We are used to a good hoot and holler and when that is missing it can be hard to keep the energy high and even harder to stay brave. The funny thing is that many people will come up afterwards and say "I love what you do!" or "That was wonderful. How do I get involved?" but when you are up on stage grinding in silience it's doesn't always feel that way.

We hope to bring the bump n grind to new audiences everywhere and will proudly keep dancing next to our belly dance sisters. The audience will come around, I'm sure of it.

I WILL UPDATE A PHOTO LINK AS SOON AS THE PICTURES START ROLLING IN.

Big Love,
Miss Frankly Scarlet

The Cadaverous Cabaret

Well I think I can speak for most of the Burly Q troupe when I express my love for the Halloween/burlesque combo. Prepping for this show was somehow more fun than normal. We almost always have a photo shoot before a show, using the pictures for press and posters, but this time someone came in to make us look like zombies! Did those Zombies get to go romp in the park? Did those zombies get to dine at McDonald's afterwards and scare away the customers? Yes! And if you ask me that just makes things a little more special. Add in dancing witches, clowns, devils, werewolves, cowgirls and all your classic Halloween favorites and you've got one hell of a night.

Plus we all know burlesque costumes are always pretty fantastic but add a clown nose, some faux fur and a stethoscope and I'm a little extra happy in my pants. Halloween wins on the fun scale every time. If you don't believe me then I suggest you meet up with us next year so we can prove you wrong...and we will, oh how we will.

I'd like to thank our extra awesome host Applo Strange, your welcome anytime and heather Sara we will miss you.

Evi Patrone 1st Annual Charity Fashion Gala

In such a small place we really need to join forces with other types of entertainment and perform wherever we can. So when Evi Patone launched her fashion line and combined her work with the talents of KeiKei du Murre the Sin City Tart Crew Burlesque Review was born and we jumped on board. All the burlesque performers from all over the city joined together to put off a wonderful show. You can't help but have a really dynamic experience when all kinds of people who don't normally work together end up performing at the same venue.

Evi's fashions were beautiful and dynamic, the burlesque was HOT ranging from traditional to modern and I don't need to tell you that the aerial silk performance was breathtaking...come on who doesn't love that shit.

Headline Honeys One Year Anniversary

This one’s for the ladies.
Headline Honeys celebrate their one year anniversary with a charity show for Marguerite's Place, a division of the St. John's Women's Center.

The Headline Honeys know that friendship is like a good brassiere - it's all about proper support. That’s why their
anniversary show will be a celebratory shimmy in support of their friends at Marguerite's Place (a joint project of the St. John’s Status of Women Council and the St, John’s Women’s Centre). Headline Honeys’ Producer, Alicia Simms says “All of our shows are fun, but this one is also a
fundraiser. Burlesque is such a empowering art form, it makes sense for us to reach out and support other groups that empower women in different ways. Marguerite’s Place will be great resource for women in the city and we want to do our part to help them. “

Marguerite’s Place is a joint initiative of the St. John's Status of Women Council (SJSWC) and the St. John's Women’s Centre (the Women's Centre) and it will be the new home for the Women's Centre, and will house all services, programs and the offices of SJSWC and the Women's Centre. Anyone familiar with the thriving burlesque/vaudeville scene here in Sin City will be yearning to see this fantastic line-up.
